VSP organises, produces and promotes alternative beauty pageants for gay men, drag queens, transgendered females and transsexuals in Australia. Based in Melbourne, VSP was the brain-child of Gayzha Davao, a Melbourne drag queen, who with the assistance of Liz Honey Promotions started Ms Victorian Secrets (VS) in 2008. Ms VS was a successful project and saw contestants from all over Victoria. The Pageant, which was one of the first to be held outside a gay venue and for mainstream audience, saw 500 people in attendance. In 2010, VSP initiated the Ms Gay & Ms Transsexual Australia Pageant with the aim to include contestants from all over the country, so as to allow gay men, drag queens, transgendered females and transsexuals who are not in Melbourne the opportunity to be involved in an alternative pageant. Part of the tradition of the Pageant is for the winners/past contestants to undertake organising roles in future pageants, utilising their experiences and networking during and post-pageant.
VSP supports the Victorian AIDS Council of Victoria and other charitable institutions.
The Victorian Secrets Promotions (VSP) will be organising the third Ms Gay & Transsexual (TS) Australia 2012 Pageant on February 3, 2012. The event will be held at Shoppingtown Hotel in Doncaster, Melbourne.
As an annual alternative beauty pageant for gay men, drag queens, transgendered females and transsexuals, which started with humble beginnings in 2009, it has since grown in proportion and presence. The Pageant provides a safe and supportive space for the contestants and, an appreciative audience that consists of those within and outside the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and intersexed (LGBTI) community (see enclosed document for other Pageant objectives). The Pageant now sees more nation-wide representatives and, winners and contestants from past years have become established personalities and performers. Pageant winners have also been given much exposure in the respective local, national and international media.
What are the objectives of Ms Gay & Ms Transsexual (TS) Australia Pageant?
1. To provide a well-organised national pageant for gay men, drag queens, transgendered females and transsexuals in Australia.
2. To provide a safe and supportive space for contestants (consisting of gay men, drag queens, transgendered females and transsexuals) to express creatively and talent, and show beauty.
3. To show contestants’ creativity, talent and beauty to a wider and mainstream audience, by having the Pageant outside gay venues.
4. To create space for contestants from the different states to build friendship, exchange ideas/experiences and network.
5. To provide support for LGBTI celebrations e.g. Midsummer Festival and Pride March in Melbourne and Sydney, and charitable organisations.
6 To encourage positive perceptions of gay men, drag queens, transgendered females and transsexuals in general.
